Refreshing Toowoomba Buildings with Commercial Mural Projects: Blending Art and Design

Painted in 2021, this commercial mural commission was managed by Feather & Lawry Design for Rural Medical Education Australia in Toowoomba, Queensland. Created by local visual artist Katie Whyte, this hand painted mural was installed prior to joinery and fixture. Images show the space which will be utilised as a breakout space for staff, prior to the custom furniture being installed. When design meets art as part of a building renovation in Toowoomba. Rural Medical Education Australia refreshed their car space area into a multi-use courtyard and a custom design mural was in the first stage of the renovation.

This design concept is inspired by the rural landscape of the Toowoomba region and great dividing range. The artwork is titled “Rises and Sets” after the constantly changing light every dusk and dawn, and is a tribute to early rises and late days, to those living and working in rural communities, to students and staff in medical research and education, to long journeys to and from remote centres, to being separated by distance but connected in mission.

The mural is designed to create an uplifting energy in breakout space whilst maintaining harmony and balance.  The  abstract composition resembles distant mountains, creating an open sense of space in the courtyard. Organic shapes positioned diagonally across the wall create movement through the courtyard, mirroring the organic flow of foot traffic entering and interacting in this social space.

The abstract style aims to be bold, fun and engaging.  It offers a point of view to inspire creativity and imagination from its visitors while providing a peaceful and motivating space to spend time alone or in a group.

Thank you to Feather and Lawry Design for contracting me for the commission 2021
